Velvet Ant

The Velvet Ant isn’t an ant at all, it’s actually a wingless wasp. It’s called a Velvet Ant because its fuzzy red appearance looks like velvet. Don’t be tempted to touch one, they have a very painful sting! Their sting is so painful, it earned them the nick name Cow Killer because the sting is said to be so painful it could kill a cow (no cow deaths have actually been attributed to Velvet Ants).

My mom helped me safely catch this Velvet Ant in my bug viewer but if you see a Velvet Ant in the wild, it’s best to just observe it without touching.
